Could Use Some Postive Vibes

Over the summer my kitty Lucybell has been dealing a variety of health issues. She's always had tummy problems, suffering from mega-colon, in which she's on medicine. During the last couple months we have had a horrible time with fleas. She's an indoor kitty, but this summer has been unreal. We bombed the apartment, gave her Frontline , but it was like an all out war. New fleas would invade even if all the others died.

She got a tapeworm as a result of the fleas, (they're carriers apparently) and it took a few weeks to battle that. Between the tapeworm and the fleas she's lost a lot of weight.

The last couple days she hasn't left my side. She won't eat, she looks miserable, and I just have this gut feeling that she's in a bad way.

Hubby is taking her to the vet tomorrow and I would really appreciate it if you guys could send positive vibes this way. She's ten years old, but she’s a robust Maine Coon, and until this, a very vibrant, healthy cat.

Getting her to her regular vet ASAP is a good idea - as in when they are open. *nods*

*hugs you both*

Wishing all of you good things. I know first hand what it like to have a sick pet and just want to make them better. Lots of snuggling helps a bit.

I'm not discounting your concerns, but I can tell you that fleas alone can really make an animal miserable and unthrifty. The constant scratching can make them lose a lot of weight too--more than you realize.

Unfortunately, I'm not seeing Frontline doing the job any more. This summer I've had a ton of clients with break-through flea infestations despite using Frontline monthly. I've been telling clients to switch to Advantage for indoor cats--at the very least until the end of the flea season.

Hopefully, there is nothing more serious going on than that. *fingers crossed*

Does she still have fleas? I know they can make cats anemic.

I'm sending positive healing thoughts, that everything will turn out okay! Good luck!

I can totally empathize with you. We moved to this house in feb of '09 and that first summer, around mid to the end of July, started noticing fleas on the two dogs. They'd had frontline a week or two earlier so I was really surprised and that was the start of a month of battling those things culminating in using a new oral treatment that worked amazing plus having the yard treated. We were very lucky they never got hold inside as I've heard from others how hard they are to fight. Next two summers -- repeat the above. This area, the fleas are terrible! Loki also got tapeworm from them that first summer. He's had non-stop health problems for the last couple of years and the financial toll has been huge. :(

The medicine that really worked on the fleas was comfortis but I use it cautiously. After I used it that first time I did some reading because it was SO effective. Well, it was so effective because it's very toxic. The dogs never needed another dose the rest of that fall (months!) and the package says to dose monthly. If I had done that, I think the levels of toxicity would've risen to a degree where it would have affected their health. When I had to use it again, I've given them half a dose, and the worst side effect we've had is upset tummies. It is a God send in that it works amazing, but I wouldn't give the amount the package suggest or dose them near as frequently. Frontline's effectiveness has gotten to the point where you are almost better off using water and dawn soap. :/

I hope your kitty's lethargy is just related to her mega-colon and some medication tweaking brings her spirits up!

I know I don't comment (ever) but we just had our dog at the vet so I can understand how it feels. Hopefully if it's just the mega-colon acting up the vet will put her on an IV until she feels better and starts eating again.

I also understand the battle with fleas, even with an animal that doesn't go outside, they'll travel on you into your house. My folks use a flea pill on their two dogs and cat, it seems safe enough considering one of the dogs is 15 (he's the one who was just in the vet) has been on them for a year and the cat is referred to as Fat Cat. :D I can get the name if you'd like, the animals still get the occasional flea but the pill kills the eggs and kills the new fleas for a month, then you just re-dose them.

*HUGS* I am so sorry to hear about your kitty not feeling well! Sure she is 10, but she still has a lot of years left. I hope the vet is able to pinpoint the problem and start treating it. My kitties are sending purrs her way!
