Season 5 Cast Stuff

I wrote a response to [livejournal.com profile] wraithfodder's post that includes the actual Press Annoucnement to season 5. http://wraithfodder.livejournal.com/169871.html

This is a dicussion/reaction to Season 5's cast stuff and stuff. Don't read if you don't want to know such news.

My reply to her sums up my ractions, so yes, I'm lazy and putting it here.

I've thought about things and here's where I stand.

Woosley.

I think he's pretty cowardly, doesn't have the stones to make good choices and is too rash because his real, actual experience is reports. Which makes him sort of interesting. He's not likable..I mean he's not a jerk and a decent guy, but he's IOA...and will appear to be their puppet. As Joe Flanigan has said, its no fun with 'everyone' gets along and I'm sure Joe/Sheppard will have fun with that increase in tension and drama.

Someone like Woolsey is what I think TPTB wanted all along in that position. A paper pusher, make command decisions, and not the type of guy who went off world. It makes John the expert on military matters and in charge again. Makes McKay an expert on everything techy. I don't think the TPTB ever thought Elizabeth would ever grow as a character and become a fan favorite so when she pushed for more—and it what was beyond what they intended for the role, we saw the result.

Also with needing a Season 5 pick up they went with Carter in hopes of ratings and the fact she's a familiar face and all around wonderful actress. I hope they make use of her appearances wisely when she does come on board, but honestly I fear cast bloat and would be happy with only a few.

Carson.

Yay he's back! I'll take five episodes, wished for more. Honestly ideally they would cut Keller back and give HIM more screen time, but if they both have to share, Id rather have him more prominent role in fewer episodes

Maybe something really bad will happen requiring both Keller and Carson have to team up.

Keller.

If she's staying she needs to be fixed I agree. I don't want more woe is me, background, just make her stronger. And for Pete's sake more compassionate! She's a tin man right now for me. And mousy and weak..I'd like her more if she would get some confidence as you said.

Daniel.

I like him, I do. But I'm already smelling a two-part McKay and Jackson geek fest written my Martin G. Um, let's keep him to a nice two parter, keep it special. I don't want SGA to be the backboard for SG1 people..they had ten years.

With all this craziness and we get nothing on say..I don't know..the TEAM. You know in all my other ensemble casts I always heard what the lead's development and story lines were going to be...I hear crickets.

Sigh.

All this doesn't really bother me if its handled right. They handled season 4 pretty darn well. I love SGA and I'm going to be open and optimistic to all this as I was this year.

As long as the TEAM remains the focus, I'll be find with the support cast.

My main concern right now is that with this expanding cast of regular and guest characters, we'll see less and less of characters like Lorne and Zelenka, who I find far more interesting than, say, Keller. *cough*

I like the idea of Woolsey, though. When I initially read the press release, I was taken aback, but if written properly, it could be good.

I'm too lazy to go search it up right now, but I think Joe M said either today or yesterday that the team was going to remain the focus, as the core team.

I also want to see a Keller and Carson team-up. It would probably Joss my personal fanon about her being his little protege, but I think it would be a fantastic way to compare their characters. (Vanilla versus--I mean...)

Well it's wait and see, I am kind of intrigued, hubby not so much, this is hubby reaction:
"what!! they are changing a hot chick for a bold coward guy with glasses WTF?"

I of course smacked him for the chick remark and of course in return he pointed out my shameless Sheppard drooling and I said: "fine!" and then lost my thread of thought thinking how hot sheppard is lol.

But anyway!! I am curious about this, I have never been too much of a extreme fan that would stop watching the show over cast changes (unless of course Rodney or Sheppard were out).

I will wait an see, this worries me less than the actual season finally who has me freaking out because I know deep in my heart I will cry like baby and suffer greatly of anxiety attacks during the waiting moths for the premier.

When I first read it was going to Woolsey taking over, the only thing that popped into my head was a picture of him cowering behind his desk as Atlantis falls to "XYZ" villain. Then I calmed down and actually remember the episode "The Scourge" from SG1. He was actually very good, and almost action hero like.... almost. So I figure I'll give him a shot. Let's face it, TPTB have always said the head of the expedition was never meant to go off-world. They're the pencil pushing, administrator, figure-head. And in that respect, Woolsey sounds pretty good.

When it was announced Carter was taking over the expedition, there was this uproar about how she would dominate the show. But so far, she hasn't been seen all that much. So I haven't been upset she joined. Keller on the other hand..... Seriously, how do you get a job going to another galaxy when you're afraid of your shadow. And trees. And bugs. And just about everything else. She just reminds me of some doctor's daughter playing make believe. I would love for Carson to come back full time, but do we really know how he comes back? I mean beyond the whole "what took you so long" in The Kindred. It's the real Carson, but after a year of captivity, how is he?

As far as the core team. I'm not worried, TPTB would have announced in the press release whether any of them were cutting back or leaving. The only thing that has me anxious is that in the description for the season 5 opener, the issues of this season's finale are not mentioned. Granted, it's just a bare bones description, but still. I think I'm going to be biting my nails all summer. And they're pretty short to begin with!

I am sure the team will remain the focus. I'm intrigued by how Woolsey will go over, and even more so by the new character. The list of "sub characters" seems to be ever increasing. I don't think we get to see enough of Zelenka, Lorne etc as it is! I also read someplace (maybe on Joe Mallozzi's blog) that Keller is going to be a regular member of the cast instead of recurring. Hopefully that bodes well for her character development.

*cross fingers*

>>A paper pusher, make command decisions, and not the type of guy who went off world. It makes John the expert on military matters and in charge again. Makes McKay an expert on everything techy.<<

That's what I thought too. I think Woolsey as head of the Atlantis-expedition strentghtens the role of the guys and makes for a whole bunch of development-possibilities.

Yes, I think we can expect to see a lot of tension and arguments since he's not an expert at anything except administration and paper-pushing. Making risky decisions about things where the outcome is anything but sure also isn't his thing and I guess we can expect seeing clashes on this topic too. There's such a lot of potential with Woolsey here, I really like this. :-)

Plus, we already know from the way he handled Elizabeth's and Sam's performance review in the end of the respective episodes that he's able to occasionally show an surprising amount of insight and thoughtfulness for such a paper-pusher. Which means, there's already room for a possible direction of development.

Living in the Pegasus-galaxy and having your hide saved more or less regularly by people who have a tendency of not looking *too* close at regulations sometimes might also make you reconsider your priorities and loyalities. Could make him pretty creative on the "how to write a report to earth"-front. ;-) After all, I guess the last thing he would want is having one of his most competent people removed while he has to *stay* with lesser competent ones. *g*

Oh yes, I think we can expect a lot of tension, thrill and fun from this casting decision. :-)
