It's Local Season!

When I walk into work everyday I enter through the produce section. Today we had local cherries, blueberries, raspberries and black raspberries. Not to mention local organic chard, lettuce, peas in a pod, yellow green beans, and well, it goes on. :D

We're the 17th busiest natural and organic food's co-op in the country. \o/

I work in the batcave upstairs in charge of all our bi-weekly sales, entering all products into the system, and analyzing all our costs and margins from all our vendors and local farmers. And sometimes I daydream about fanfic :-P

So yummy! I try to buy organic whenever I can. It's a bit more expensive but worth every bite.

[identity profile] kristen999.livejournal.com 2011-07-09 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it can be pricy. Sometimes the best thing is to buy the top fruits and vegetables that are the most sprayed by pesticides. As a co-op, our prices are drastically lower than anything organic at a giant grocery store, so that helps a lot. We actually sell most of our organic grass fed beef and chicken at only 8-10% above cost to benefit our community.

Eating organic has ruined my mom's cooking for me! Eeek.

I would like ALL of that fruit, please :D

Wait until I post pics of all our bakery items!

I'd also like an express delivery of the Danny in your icon :D

That's one sexy man and icon don't ya think? :-P

[livejournal.com profile] larmay made it and he's free to a good home.

What an awesome place to work! I would be hard pressed to make it home with any money at the end of the day.

[identity profile] kristen999.livejournal.com 2011-07-09 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! Yeah. I manage to eat under $5 a day there because I've become the master of picking out a plate of food under a pound at our hot-bar. Don't get be started on all the baked goods, deli and grocery items that tempt me on a daily bases :_p

[identity profile] ldyanne.livejournal.com 2011-07-09 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You are good! I have a hard time getting my salad under $5.00 when it's at one of those places where it has to be weighed.

Would love the cherries! They're so expensive in grocery stores.

[identity profile] kristen999.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Are they? It's funny, the only time I go inside a real grocery store is when I visit my mom. I have no idea how much food is anywhere else :-P

Out local cherries are $3.99 per lb and starting next week they'll be on sale for our member/owners for $2.99 per lb.

I love wheeling and dealing with our suppliers :-P

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
God that all looks so good. Organic food around here is so pricey I rarely buy :(

[identity profile] kristen999.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
That's the frustrating thing.

One of the goals of a co-op is to make organics affordable, maybe there's one in your area?

[identity profile] wraithfodder.livejournal.com 2011-07-11 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'll have to check. So far things like farmer's markets, etc. aren't cheap.

I love this time of year. My grocery has a special section of local produce, and it's always wonderful when the fruits and vegetables are in season.

It's a great time of year. Once early August hits, everything explodes in abundance :D

*yummy* Now I'm in the mood for some cherries (and strangly corn)!

[identity profile] a-pilgrim-soul.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm... cherries but so very expensive, last time I brought some it cost me £7 for a little punnet. They're a rare treat.

We grow as much fruit and veg of our own as we can in our limited space. Our blueberry bush only has about 3 berries on it this year - its young though so hopefully it'll be more fruitful next year. We got a good crop of red currants, gooseberries and strawberries though and in a few weeks we'll have pears, plums and apples, in fact one of our apple trees is so laden with fruit it started to fall over so its currently propped up. Oh and we had plenty of rhubarb earlier in the year.

And vegetable wise we grow potatoes, runner beans, french beans, broad beans, peas, cabbages, cauliflowers, sprouts (won't be good until the end of the year after the first frost), sprouting broccoli, carrots, radishes, shallots, lettuces & beetroot. And we have 2 greenhouses full of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and chillis.

And later in the season we'll go blackberrying - one of the benefits to living out in the countryside.

So yeah, that was probably the most boring comment you've ever had. *lol* Sorry!

That's so awesome that you're able to grow, your descriptions sound yummy. Nothing like enjoying the fruit of your labor

It is ALL welcomed.......

BTW I see you have my favorite corn, yellow AND white
on same cob
