2011 Fanfic in Review
Here is my fandom in review. A comment or two on each story.

Hawaii Five-O
Distant Shores--WWII Pacific Theater based AU Slash 23k
My second favorite story this year and my most challenging. Breathing life into the era, the slow boil of a growing relationship, and all during a war? I loved the juxtaposition of simmering warmth against the backdrop of something so sad and horrible.
No Good Deed Goes Unpunished --Gen H/C Team 6k
This was a semi-coda thing to Season two. Steve reacts to a deadly situation the only way he knows how and the rest of the team have to deal with the fallout. I especially loved pushing Chin to a rare point in this one.
The Edge of the Knife --Gen. Kono and Steve friendship. Kono POV. 9k
This was so much fun to write. Kono and Steve both being competent and badass while undercover. Shades of Steve as mentor. I re-wrote the beginning four times and once I got that smoothed away, the rest clicked in place.
Against the Wall--Gen H/C Danny and Steve. 3k
I really wanted to write a BAMF!Danny. Pushing Danny to his breaking point was something I'd been eager to play with. This one had slight shades of dark, but it was really an experiment in tone.
When the Ocean Meets the Shore--Gen Case fic H/C 25k
A friend of Steve's is found dead of an overdose and he's determined to prove there was foul play involved. But this wasn't just any Navy buddy, this was his SEAL mentor. I really wanted to explore Steve's backstory as a SEAL. We all know about BUDs, but there's another eighteen months of training afterward. I wanted to play with that while giving weight to the loss Steve felt.
Tread Softly--Gen H/C 4k
Steve gets hurt. Danny like a good partner tries to take care of him. Ha!
Getting By With a Little Help From My Friends--Gen Team Fic 4k
Moments where the team is there for one another.
Hills of Sacrifice
Steve’s done his duty, now it’s Danny’s turn.
Trust People and They Will Be True to You --Gen Steve Team Action H/C 13k
This was my favorite story of the year. Steve the one man army, rescuing his team, using his tactics and skills. The team rescuing him back. It was a thrill to write and resonated with a lot of readers.
Drownproofing --Gen Steve and team 3k
This was an excuse to write Steve being a badass. Plain and simple.
Gambit --Gen Team Action H/C Danny POV
My first H50 fic .Steve is missing and the team race to find him. I'd re-write the whole thing now, but it was a fun dip into the pool.
NCIS
Anchor and Hold--Gen Tony Centric H/C. 17k
Written as a B-day fic for a friend. Tony gets to be heroic and pays the price during a fire.
Stargate Atlantis
Is Anybody Out There?--Gen H/C 8K
Sheppard's lost in the ocean all alone. Slowly sinking. With no way to the surface. Loved writing the tension level in this fic.
Tour de Pegasus --Gen John and Ronon friendship. 5k
A story about hope and healing.
The Daily Grind --Gen John centric 8k
What does it take to run a city? A story about command and slices of life. Set when John was still recovering from “Search and Rescue”
Tin Man --Gen Team H/C 30k
This is one of my favorite SGA stories. It was emotionally challenging to write and as an author I felt I'd pushed myself creatively. The team is losing John one piece at a time, but how can they help him if they don't know what's happening?

I wanted to find out when you start writing? not when did you start but do you brainstorm/write copious notes and then build a story? Or have ideas that pop straight into your head like movie scenes or is it like pulling teeth?
Your writing just seems to 'pace and plot' so well its like a movie in my head rather than a fic i am reading (if that makes sense?)
My favourite(s) are H50 -Drownproofing, Against the Wall and Distant Shores.

Hmmm. It depends. For one-shots like “Drownproofing” and “Against the Wall”, I start off with a single scene in my head. Drownproofing was about Steve getting tossed into the ocean with his hands and feet tied up and still making it back. That's a SEAL skill. Thus I wanted to focus on the realistic edge of that. How he could calmly maneuver himself out of the situation and swim back.
With Against the Wall--My prompt was ‘one of the guys forced to listen what was happening to the other with the wall in the way.’ In that case, I focused on how the wall was both an anchor and horrible barrier for Danny. I wanted Danny to be the one to kind of lose it and kick ass and rescue Steve. My goal was the purging of pure emotion.
For longer stories I plot the action or plot points out first if I can. It’s nothing long, just bullet points.

Discover heroin was fake
Shootout at Warehouse
Find weapon
Simple stuff like that. This way I have this broad idea, but have plenty of wiggle room to change things. I think with casefic, it’s important to have the how, where, what, and who figured out beforehand.
Most of my prep time is devoted to research. With “Distant Shores” I knew the story would take place over time, that I needed the reader to understand what Danny, Steve, and Chin did and give the reader an idea of their lives as I slowly weaved in the relationships. I knew that before I did my research.
Then the research dictated the plot as is so happens most of the time. I read a lot. I feel if I read about a subject matter to the point of some familiarity, than as a writer, I can add my imagination to use what I’ve learned to add the realistic details. I had TONS of notes. I’d copy the link to a source, copy and paste the research into a page and read it. I’d have my sources divided up

I had 40 sources I think and something like 150 pages of notes with the really important stuff highlighted. But that’s kind of huge because it was a historical AU.
