It looks like MGM is putting a lot of money into a new historical series tentatively called "Vikings".

EXCLUSIVE: In one of the highest-profile TV projects to come out of post-bankruptcy MGM, the studio has teamed with The Tudors and Camelot masterminds Michael Hirst and Morgan O'Sullivan for Vikings (working title), a drama series about the famous Scandinavian warriors. Hirst, creator of Showtime's The Tudors and co-creator of Starz's Camelot, created Vikings and will executive produce with Irish-based producer O'Sullivan and producers/managers Sherry Marsh and Alan Gasmer. The series is eyed to begin production on a 10-episode first season next year at O'Sullivan's soon-to-open studio facility in Ireland.

I love period series having been a fan of "Rome" and the "Tudors" for a while. (And war dramas like "Band of Brothers") And no one does historical series better than cable network TV because they have the pockets for bigger productions and access to a better team of writers and actors. I didn't like the looks of "Camelot", but I'll definitely keep my eye open for this. If the scripts are in the vein of "Rome", taking the material seriously more so than "Spartacus", than I'm very curious.
