Fabulous story! I love the grit and raw emotion in Steve. I could see the kinship he felt towards Marcus, not only common threads in their backgrounds, but Marcus basically training him and having his back, like a real brother. Poor Steve, drowning in guilt for not talking to him when he called. A double blow and a devastating sense of loss and what if. Great job of showing that the emotional toll hurt as much as the physical pain.
Loved the plot line and new characters, especially Marcus. Wonderful use of the flashbacks to flesh out Marcus and give us more insight into Steve. Smart use of the small details to alert Steve to trouble and to clues. The team rocked here, reading Steve so well and then keeping personal guard over him as they knew not to trust him to stay put. Danny in particular was awesome, great banter and intuitively knowing when to step in and takeover. Very clever of the bad guys to use the tech against Chin and Danny, added another level of suspense to the story. Ha, love Steve going one step further using the lasers to fake out the crooks. Great conclusion to that part of the story.
The actual ending was brilliant. The funeral with Steve as a pallbearer and the team in attendance was very poignant, a real tearjerker. Love the show of support for both Marcus and Steve. Beautiful segue into the gathering at Steve's and Steve finally opening up to his ohana. Fantastic story, loved every word. This one will be re-read many, many times. Mahalo!
