E-mailing myself has been my best practice and I back-up to a flash-drive once a week since I have every draft in my G-mail. I started messing around with Googledocs recently and that looks great.
I've never had issues with my flash-drive, but that goes to show that saving it it more than on spot is the key! Glad you were able to piece it back together.
