What could have been...

spoilers for Remnants...minor really as I have to go to bed....

We all know John tortures himself, I was hoping for something deeper, but it was all just raw whump and no fallout...heck there was no build anywhere.

I think this had a lot pf potential..but with three story arcs, no room for any emotional build up what so ever.

Every time things got tense..it cut away....I mean it was so choppy and damn what about the psychological fallout?

John tortures himself so much he deserves to have his hand chopped off? And nothing?

This should have been a Sheppard Plot A storyline..Woosley..Minor B...anything was ruined by trying to split it up too much.

Here's to fanfic with the little we were given

...really? I couldn't have been any happier with this episode. I think it gave us everything we needed. *shrug* To each their own.

it has the wost sense of pace ever....twenty seconds before cut to next scene....sigh..I guess I should not be surprised TBTB have shown they have had no idea how to explore John's character since season two

Maybe sleep will make things better..but the way my f-list is reacting it seems to be about the same....

but I'm glad you liked it! :D

Seriously? Huh. I thought, on first viewing, it was a very well-done episode. And I don't mean to be rude, but I completely disagree with that statement about John's character. :\ they gave us Common Ground, and Phantoms, and even though it was mainly a Rodney episode, The Shrine. Not to mention Adrift, and Lifeline. *shrug* Whatever.

If you compare what they've done with rodney vs. sheppard...the scale is waaaay off balance. I liked "Phantoms" but we already knew everything that was shown/said based on what John had mentioned in the past. it wasn't anything we haven't already known.

"Outcast" was really the only eppy that gave us anything new. My main issue is I always like the support cast of most shows while the lead is the explored the most...my one show I really like both leads and the one that's supposed to be front in center gets to shoot things which is cool :D But he rarely ever gets a plot to himself that has any depth and thats the fault of the writers.

Don't get me wrong..I'm griping and I'm really tired. I love this show...and always will. And I'll re-watch this again---but I'm feeling a little cheated right now.

It was a complete disaster. I turned it off with a massive sense of disappointment and it was kind of the 'last shot' for them to redeem the debacle they've made of this season. It started off so promising and just went completely off the rails.

Upon re-watching it a few times, I've gone and enjoyed the parts I liked --I'm still upset over the what could have been....and just hope to see some good fic out of it.

I wish it was a bit more suspenseful...I figured it all out ten minutes into the ep :(

That's what I was worried about with this episode after reading the synopsis - that it had all these stories going on plus nasty Shep-whump, I had the feeling that what Sheppard would be put through wouldn't be what it should have been.

However, since I haven't seen the episode, that's all I can really say. So far, I've read two other reviews, one negative, one kind of "meh" but none of them detailed so... *shrugs*.

But, man, I wish I could see it. I've been wanting to write aftermath fic based on whump from an actual episode, and felt from the start since reading about Remnants that this "might" be the episode to provide.

Have you seen it yet? You have high speed, now, right? Should only take about half an hour ro d/l from the piratebay.

I have to admit I liked it, and probably because I have low expectations for any Mallozzi-penned script, I thought it was decent, and even worse.... well, I expect the fans (oh please please please) to write the great fleshing out scene. I mean, yes, we all know John tortures himself, but wow, the psychological impact of what he went through should give him a lot of sleepless nights... plus, well, his stump should have seeped. Why are the people on this show so afraid of showing a little blood? They beat the crap out of mitchell on SG1!

The hand chopping must have been hand waved b/c it was in his head...I mean the blood loss, shock and pain of such an injury would have been mind-numbing.

I have sinced, had a change of heart over the eppy, though with major gripes.

Agree with you 100%. I liked the ep, but feel cheated that we got no fallout from what happened to Shep. We also didn't learn anything new. I wanted to hear specifics - instances, regrets - something tangible. I wanted some comfort for Shep, him dealing with the repressed feelings drawn out in the incident.

Enjoyed the team moments in the beginning and end and the lone McKay-Sheppard moment in the gateroom.

The best part was Koyla telling John that he tortured himself...actually when John said it himself.

According to JM's blog they cut out a line baout John's mom....now that could have been interesting...sigh. But in the end I did like, felt abit let down but am given more hope for he moive since JM is writing it.

I liked the ep, and the Shep whump was good, but what this was saying about Sheppard psychologically was huge. I wished they'd gone into more depth with that - I agree Sheppard should have been the Plot A storyline. I didn't have high expectations that they'd actually dive that deep into Shep's psyche, but there were so many opportunities here. John is confronted with the fact that he carries around mass amounts of guilt that tortures him every day, and he says...nothing. It's almost like the writers are afraid of letting him show too much emotion. Do they think that will make him look weak? I don't know...There are plenty of really good shows and great lead characters that would refute that idea...

Of all the writers, I think Binder does the best of giving us the most indepth look at the characters. Unfortunately, he was usually given (or volunteers for) the eps that feature Keller or Weir - not that I don't like either of those two characters, but I'd like to see Sheppard get some of the same range as most of the others (Teyla in my mind is the only other character who doesn't get much development, but even she has gotten a little more than Sheppard.)

Whoa, starting to ramble now...I liked the episode, but definitely not one of my favs. The fan fic based on this could be awesome, though. Come on, Fanfic! This is where you shine!!

(And the stump should definitely have bled at least a little. Are a few spots of blood too graphic? I don't think so...)

Binder is good with the action, I think Alan is really good with the emotion arcs. I know Martin G was supposed to have penned it at one point which which might have been good or horrid. He's an amazing writer....when he's forced to write about people other than Rodney.

Heh... there was a whole lot missing about the hand...hello, shock, blood loss and no way would he have been able to fight..yet we did get some of the best commanod John in a long time.

YES. By the end of the episode I really could not have cared less whether Woolsey felt like he belonged. I wanted to know WHAT THE HELL JOHN WAS THINKING AFTER ALL OF THAT. GAH. I mean, I enjoyed the episode, generally, but OMG WHAT THE HECK.

John never gets the comfort...the only time he did he never saw it in "Conversion".

JM axed a line about John's mom....I wonder how much more was cut. I guess we have fic....sigh.

That's an interesting point. Now I wonder if John really was running around out there or sitting in a corner. The cliff thing makes me think the former as it was the reason why the alien stopped playing along as he did't want to see "John die".

AGREEEEED! I was UBER disappointed. God, could've knocked me over with a feather when Kolia (I so forgot how to spell that) cut off John's hand, and the beatings, and the near fall to death over the cliff, and and and...

It was worse than the Dallas ep where Bobby wakes up and it's all a dream! CRAP!

No fallout=bad. That was such a let down. All John's yummy cuts and contusions.. GONE!!! *sighs unhappily*

Rushed=bad. Ugh.. bad pacing.

Lemme guess, Mullozzi wrote this one? My dvr didn't catch the writer, but this has all the disappointedness of a Mullozzi episode.

JM did write it......the man has the worst pacing issues. The choppy editing to this was just horrid. What's odd is that JM penned a good Ronon eppy, allowed the big guy to go through hell and show the aftermath..yet he can't with John.

Why?

As Koyla said....why?

I liked it, but felt they could have done so much more... Though it was nice to have some canon to back up what we already knew about Shep. It was just too much story constricted, and we ended up with a lot less of Shep than we would like... and nothing else afterwards...

The canon back-up was nice. I'll give them that. And haveing John connect the dots was good as wasshowing John as a deadliy solider was awesome. We've been missing that for a while...but the lack of emotioanl fallout was just awful.

Go to it! Please. I would love to read some other versions of Remnants that do address those deeper areas...that do reward the audience/reader with a build up and payoff. JM tried to serve too many masters by splitting the episode into 3 storylines. It makes me feel that he really has an aversion to the Sheppard character and refuses to give him proper attention.

Having three storylines was jsut silly. Two would have been fine, adding some emotional layers and fall out.
