I have spent the last two nights reading Martha Wilson's “Retrograde” Series. (I've read all of her other fics)--click on Retrograde to go to her site.

During a time when I have been exhausted, stressed, and trying to write a crazy ton..this has become my happy place.

I've always meant to read it...but I think it is one of the most entertaining, best characterized, exciting, real, lush and just down right amazing series.

I can not rec it more. The fusion of SG-1 characters and our guys it downright amazing. It's full of tension, action, then easy warm moments. The characterizations floors me and I just love, love the team which is amazing since Ronon's hardly in it.

(Its AU, if Atlantis had never re-connected with Earth until three years later)

What just makes me smile is the warmth and sense of family. And I adore the sheer loyalty that everyone has towards John and the inclusion of the Athosians in this.

I swear its like watching a whole new season with Jack and Mitchell added to the mix. And some of the best Teyla, Rodney and yes, Bates interactions.

Amazing.

I so agree that Retrograde is a wonderful story arc and I really hope that Ms. Wilsoon writes many more stories in this 'verse. Happy place fic indeed. It's one of mine too.

:: Happy sigh :: Lots of warm fuzzies associated with the whole storyline.

Her LJ was delated recently, so fear it will be a while. Seems there was a flurry for writing a couple of years ago and thing slowed..I hope she is inspired again :D

P.S. Now I am really thankful that I saved all her stories to my HD while I could!

I LOVE that series. I've read it like five or six times. Ever so often, I realize I haven't read it in a while and go back to read it again. Her other SGA fics are wonderful as well, but there's something almost magical about the Retrograde verse. I would love to actually see all those stories made into shows or that version actually be a series as well. I LOVE the way Atlantis became a sort of big intrograted community and protector of the galaxy. Sheppard and Bates relationship in that one is funny as well. OH, man . . . now I'm going to have to go read it again and I really don't have time.

I've read all of her other one-shots and series but just made myself sit down like this before. I'd die if I ever saw this type of storytelling come to life on screen. it just lives and breathes and feels so real.

So THEM.

What are you up to these days?

Coughing and teaching and trying to get by on no sleep while resisting the urge to write (for the most part). Mostly I feel like I'm running as fast as I can with no hope of ever catching up. I wish I could go back in time and have someone knock the living daylights out of me when the whole teaching thought popped up. On the plus side, Thanksgiving is next week and I think I may just sleep one whole day!

Ouch about the teaching thing. Yeah I get turkey day off but have to be at work the next day at 6am :(

When's your winter break? That's something to look forward to, right???

Oh, you've discovered my happy place! *glee* I love this series with the intensity of seven suns. That's why I love Martha Wilson's fics so much because in them, everybody is so loyal to John. It's like, touch him and you're dead. It's too bad that we didn't see it on the show :( I would love to see this one in a book form!

Did you read her other long story? The pirate one? Another "everybody is loyal to John" AU! 8)

And if I can rec you another long (almost 50 000 words) gen story - "Blood Is Thicker" by T'Pring. It's a great story about John's brother getting to Atlantis and to what lenghts the others would go to save John's life. Amazing! Another "I wish this was a book" story!

The pirate fic..Martha's or Ryhmer's?

I have to be in the mood for AUs like that since I like reading them as our guys. Is the link on her site?

Blood is thicker is so good and the sequel, My Brother's Keeper is awesome too. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4540629/1/My_Brothers_Keeper

I really like T'Pring. Very thoughtful person.

That's one of my absolute favorite SGA stories. I reread it often. :) You probably already have, but be sure to read all of the little one-shot stories she wrote in that universe, too.

I've read up through the Lorne segments and will try to complete the rest after work.

Then I think that's it :(

I wish she still wrote..I adored her Ronon and John fic fomr a couple of months ago.

From: [identity profile] mahoni.livejournal.com
Yeah, it does seem to be it. Which is such a bummer, but also completely understandable. :\

Also, Martha's pirate story isn't a piratey pirate story with, like, high seas pirates. It's AU in a similar way that Retrograde is, in which everybody is who they are except affected by events which have turned out much differently than in canon. Er, if that makes sense. It's FANTASTIC. I strongly recommend it, I think you'd really like it.

I should read this! I love her one-shots, but I tried Retrograde when I was first getting into the fandom and couldn't get very far into it; I think it was all the SG-1 characters (at that time, I hadn't watched SG-1 in a number of years and really wasn't into it) and, at that time, I wasn't really interested in AUs either. (Boy, has SGA fandom changed that aspect of my fannish tastes. *g*) I know that I read the Vegas vignette but I think that's the only piece of it that I've read beyond some bits and pieces from the first part.

I think I tried reading it a couple of years ago, too but didn't get into the "Au" aspect..now however, I've fond my tastes are changing. I'm still very interested in John's a shrink and Rodney's a teacher :-P

But what if-stuff..where they're still in the same roles, in the same galaxy is growing on me. Just read the whole thing in order, its great!

This should be required reading for SGA fandom. Can't tell you how many times I've read this and her other stories as well. Love it and can't recommend it highly enough.

it is great! Makes me want to expand my reading into other Atlantis was cut off fomr Earth, SG-1 fusions...or other things. Just as long as our team is still our team.

I liked it but have never reread it because of the McShep. By the way, I nominated you for an Isis. Thanks for the great stories. http://www.isisawards.net/nominees08.php?m=18&f=20

Thank you for the nom! That was very sweet! Will try to read some of those when I have the time :D

Retrograde was pure gen for four whole stories...I think there was a tiny scene between John, Rodney, and Teyla in "Vegas" so that didn't effect my enjoyment of the rest.

Hmm...Maybe I am remembering the wrong stories? Is this the watergate one? Where John kind of hooks up with all of them?

I know one of them is the one where a village leader's son drugs John and Teyla in order to compromise them and they have to hide out in a house where Jack cooks them pancakes.

Date: 2008-11-20 06:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] asugar.livejournal.com
Yeah...I remember that one. He and Teyla are kind of drunk and he's self-destructing wait to hear what the brass back at the SGC will decide to do with them and Rodney gets them a highroller penthouse villa? I didn't interpret that one as McShep despite the threeway. Maybe I am thinking of that massive (and good) series of stories where they break off contact with Earth as an act of independence (I think they send Elizabeth and some of the others through the wormhole to the SGC when they do) and he's in some kind of relationship with all of them, Rodney and Teyla in particular. And it has all those fabulous faux documentary sources/historical resources and fake footnotes and bibliography? It's written as a history of Atlantis/biography of John?

You're thinking "Written By the Victors" which IS slash. That's by cesperanza, which I haven't read yet.

Date: 2008-11-20 06:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kristen999.livejournal.com
I haven't read all the 'mini' stories for it yet. When you read the first one, it links you to each sequel which is one storyline. SG-1 finds Atlantis too late after three years, lots of mistrust and re-taking the city. The team goes back to Earth..etc.

Now if you scroll down there are fics in the same 'retoverse' kind of thing and yeah those look a mix of slash and gen, but the main series is all gen. My link gives you the retorgrade story index and you can see how they go.

Now to watch NCIS and write a little.

Goes:

Retrograde
Recovery
Movie Night
Least Resistance
Tropic of Cancer

All the Earth stuff and introducing Lorne.....

From: [identity profile] asugar.livejournal.com
Yes, and there is an imposter Trust group that reaches them first before Jack and SG-1 and does all kinds of bad things to them, right?

NCIS was a total bust. I am cancelling my season pass.

I don't think I've ever heard of this one - I just spent the last three days reading all of it. That was great! You were right about the characterization. Amazing. And I was laughing out loud on some parts, sometimes because it was a funny line but mostly because it was so true to what the character would do or say. Thanks for the rec.

I vaguely recall a story where John (and others?) accidently get sent to an alternate dimension Atlantis where the Genii (or maybe not Genii...?) have taken over part of the city and the survivors in Atlantis are fighting to get it back. I can't remember if it was this story - Retrograde - and I'm just not remembering it right, or if that's another story completely. Ring any bells?

Not sure...I used to avoid AUs now I might be open to more well written ones. Might ask for recs once my big pile of writing goes down.

I think it was Retrograde that made me a little more brave about giving AUs a chance. It was deifnitely the story that got me falling in love with "what-if" scenarios (i.e. what if the expedition remained cut off from earth?) I love 'em all :D (well, except Vegas for obvious reasons and other reasons I won't get into.)

Date: 2008-11-21 06:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kristen999.livejournal.com
It's certaily opened my mind to more AUs as long as its still in this vein. SG-1 fusions, or post Atlantis stuff.

I found that one scene in "Vegas" to come out of nowhere...while it won't keep me from reading it again...it felt out of place.
