Lily ON GW found a small Joe interview "Here” done during FedCon and SheppAddictedFangirl translated it and I thought I'd pass it along. Thanks ladies! :D

I love his philosophy about fearing things.
Keep in mind, this was translated from English to German first, then translated back from me, so it might not have been the exact words by Joe.
Stargate Project: Hello Joe! Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with Stargate Project. How are you doing today?
Joe Flanigan: You´re welcome. I´m doing great.
SG-P: This is the first time you´re in Germany. What´s your first impression of the country and people?
Joe: I´m not for the first time in Germany, but it´s the first time here since filming "Stargate Atlantis". I was looking around a little, and had to buy my beer - now I´m back and getting free beer, which is fantastic.
I´m amazed with how popular the series is, and the people are incredibly nice. What I like about Germany, and the rest of Europe, is that Science Fiction is so popular in comparison to America. We´re obsessed with shows like "CSI" and other stuff. - Science Fiction, for some reason, doesn´t have the same influence like it has in Europe. I think that´s because of cultural reasons. I think, science and math are more acknowledged than in our country and I think that people are more interested in exploring, science and everything, right?
SG-P: You´re playing Deputy Brady in the thriller "Good day for it". Can you tell us something about the movie and it´s story?
Joe: It´s a modern western, where you don´t really know if it´s today or 30 years ago, but it´s somewhere in that timeframe. I´m playing the Sheriff - Hal Halbrook (Hec) and Kathy Baker (Rose Carter) are in a café that I´m frequently visiting and I´m kind of their "adoptive son". A few bad guys are coming into town and cause trouble. It´s a very good script actually, with great actors and we´ll see how it will be received. I haven´t seen it yet, but it was an honor to be a part of it and Robert Patrick (Colonel Marshall Sumner, "Stargate Atlantis") had a part as well. He´s one of the main characters.
SG-P: Are there any new projects planned for the near future? Can you tell us about them?
Joe: I´m in contact with a production company, which I´m not allowed to call by name, but I think you can count on a Science Fiction show. I can´t say when exactly or if it might take a while. It depends if there´s an existing SciFi-Show that´s ready for me - it´s possible I´d be a part ot that then. But if you prefer the idea to have something specifcally produced for me, then sometimes , that takes a little longer.
SG-P: There´s something that your female fans would like to know: Which parfum / Aftershave are you using?
Joe: I don´t use any of that. I´m using neither parfum nor Aftershave - only deodorant. I´m never using Parfum or Afterhave. I think I´m too lazy for that. It looks like I have to buy me some now, and spray it on. I don´t even know where to use it. Where are you spraying it? Here for example? (Joe points to his throat). What do people do? I don´t know. I don´t own either Parfum nor Aftershave.
SG-P: Is there a role or a character you would like to play, and if yes. why?
Joe: I´d say if there was a character I would have loved to play, it would have been something like "Indiana Jones". It´s the idea, not the character, I´d be going for. The problem is that actionladen adventure shows in TV are very expensive. But I think that the characters who are generally having a good time, experiencing adventures and still have a sense of humor are the kind of persons that I want to play. There´s countless of characters that I would like to play.
Wanting to play a character is one thing, to play the character of a TV-Show for five, six, seven years is something entirely different. There´s a lot of roles I would love to play in a movie. I love to play the bad guy - I like to play all kinds of characters, but I don´t necessarily need to play the part for six or seven years.
SG-P: What drew you to the role of John Sheppard in "Stargate Atlantis" and made you want to play him?
Joe: My manager told me they´d be interested in me, and asked me if I´d be interested in "Stargate Atlantis". I had no idea what "Stargate" is, had never watched it, nor did I know what "SG-1" was. I merely supposed it had something to do with Science Fiction. So I said I can´t do it, because I´m not good enough for that. I really thought that I didn´t have the potential to do this stuff. It´s really difficult, because it´s heavily loaded with information and portrayal, and that´s why I said no.
When I talked to somebody at MGM, he said that´s it´s not at all the way I thought it would be. It wouldn´t be "Star Trek" but "Stargate" und I should watch the last episode with Richard Dean Anderson. He doesn´t take these things too seriously. That changed everything and I thought it could be fun.
SG-P: Is there something that you always wanted to do, but were afraid of?
Joe: I was never afraid to do anything. I mean, one thing I´m not afraid of, is to be afraid. Everything I want to do, I´m doing and I´m happy about that. I live where I want to live, I married the woman I wanted to marry, I have the children I was dreaming of having, I did the things I dreamed of doing and I travelled a lot. I want to do more, I want to work on great projects, I want to travel some more and see more. Life´s too short to do everything, even I´d love to do so.
But that´s a really interesting question by the way, because I was afraid of acting. I was terrrified of it, it´s the one thing I was the most scared of. That´s the reason I did it, because there´s one thing that I feared, and that was acting. So I did it, but not to become an actor, but to lose the fear of it. I was actually lucky and had success with it. I realized that if you´re doing something that you fear in your life, then you´re living an interesting life. Don´t jump off a building without a parajute.
SG-P: Thank you.

Date: 2010-07-28 09:52 am (UTC)Joe's comment about being afraid has reminiscences of, "There is nothing to fear but fear itself" (Franklin Roosevelt) He shows a lot of determination to get what he wants out of life. Surely, then, we can't be much longer without seeing him in a new show?
