An anti-gay protest from the Westboro Baptist Church at the massive comic convention Comic-Con has been muffled by a humorous counterprotest.

The Westboro Baptist church has gained notoriety for anti-gay and anti-government protests, picketing the funerals of US soldiers and celebrating the deaths of Michael Jackson and Heath Ledger.

But they met their match with convention-goers at the massive science fiction/comics event in San Diego, California, who countered the demonstration with witty signs, lurid costumes and mocking chants.

There was a sign that said "Apocalypse Coming? Don't worry, the Winchester Brothers Have it Covered", but I could not find a picture.

"What do we want? Gay sex! When do we want it? Now!" shouted members of the crowd.

The Westboro Baptist Church members soon left.......

I find them all bigoted sleaze, but to protest Comi-Con was stupid, but I think they under estimated the passion of open-minded and creative individuals.

Yay! Geek power!

Of course it begs the question of why the Westboro Baptish Church is even protesting ComicCon to begin with.

Here is this idotic response:

"Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent - so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry."

Ahaahah. Ahahahahahaa. Ahahahahahahaaaaaaaa!

I think what possibly makes me laugh most is the utter lack of comprehension - the mere fact that these people think ComicCon is a convention about comics!

It really is amazing, but then again, I don't think the Westboro Baptist church is on the same planet as we are.

Go Geeks Go! :) Wonderful when the so called "bad" people beat the so called "good" people (peacefully) with their own "weapons" and some humor. :)

And, if people spent all the time they spent reading comic books or other things on reading the bible we would still be stuck in medivial times. And I'm sure these people enjoy their fridges or their cars as well as the people they condemn...

Oh, and the Winchester sign: *lol* That's right! ;)

You know, I don't get why the church (that stands for all the hundreds of different churches/religious groups/and so on) always bash people who are different. It's one of the reasons why I stopped going to service.

In my book: God loves all of us. It doesn't matter if we are heterosexuel, homosexuel, virginal, atheistic, jewish, islamish, buddhistic, man, woman, child, soldier, stay at home mom, stripper, pop star or whatever. If he's really there, he looks at what you've done in life (and no, I don't mean your sexual orientation or if you had a crush on a popstar/comic figure/TV character), why you've done it and how you treated the people you met and chooses on this regard what to do with you... But, that are just my two cent.

I stopped going to service (I tried six churches/denominations) when people used religion as a shield for intolerance. I have the highest respect for anyone who follows a spiritual path, hopefully it'll lead them to love and acceptance.

On this particular topic, I glad for the unity of geekdom!

You know, what gets me *every* time is the impertinence with which those people claim to know what god the almighty (no matter if and if yes in which form it/she/he exists - this discussion would be beside the point here) wants/thinks is right and proclaim themselves his/her/its spokespersons.

Do they really think an *almighty* being might need them to speak up on his/her/its behalf?

Somewhere said almighty being is probably headdesking over and over again and thinking that "KILL ALL HUMANS" and starting from scratch again sounds more and more like a viable alternative.

My motto has always been to read, believe, pray, do whatever you want, however you want in peace. Just don't try to push the path you've accepted as the only 'right one'.

That's all I've ever asked.

I once tried to learn as much as I could about all main religions like Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and you know what - they are all about LOVE.

It makes my blood boil when a bunch of morons starts to spread hatred in the name of "their religion". I have a lot of respect for religious people but can't stand all those fundamentalist/extremists and the like.

Here, where I live, in a country that is 95% Catholic, people are very tolerant...provided you are Catholic, white and straight... Yes if God exists he (or she) must be very ashamed of such "believers"...

And Geeks are THE BEST! They rock! We rock! :)

Ha! I think my favorite is the one about the Cylons. LOL!

Gotta love Geeks. But then again, I find the Westboro Baptist people beneath contempt. I developed that opinion when they started protesting and spewing hate at funerals for fallen US soldiers. My god, do they have NO shame? They give all religion a bad name and I'm glad to see that most religious organizations unilaterally reject them, as well as they should.

GO GEEKS! That is just awesome! Freedom of Speech works both ways, doesn't it? ;)

I dithered on commenting because as a Christian some of the methods of protest I'm... er... a little iffy about. Though most of the signs are hilarious :D But that church is really getting on my nerves. It's like there's nothing they won't protest. I wouldn't be surprised if they protested an elementary school, next. Or how about the Humane Society. Or an orphanage. Or some random restaurant.

Plus, obviously, they're giving religion in general a bad name, creating fodder for disrespecting religion and those with religious beliefs, and I'm sick of it.

From: [identity profile] kristen999.livejournal.com
To me that church does not represent any true religious people, but a crazed set of fanatics who are more interested in hate than love. They protest our fallen soldiers' funerals.

The counter protest was done in parody and with humor and I don't think that's what that "church" expected. Ha!

They protested a High School in my town, and were at my sister's graduation at KU. So, yeah - no target is too low. They're not a church, they're a cult of personality and a PR machine. I found the humorous take on the counter protest very appropriate - it gives them too much credit to take them seriously ;-)
