And I always had it in my head that the reason his is different was to show that he's a leader but set apart from the civilian leader of the expedition. Just so that there is a distinction when it comes to their allies. (not sure if this is the best way to describe it)
Either that or the Quartermaster is just indulging his love of wearing black. :D
*scratches head* It sets him apart from the military contingent too. They don't wear anything like that, regardless of rank. Everyone on SG1 wears uniform blouses like John's (only the military's are green and the civilians' are blue), but on Atlantis he's the only one. It's a bit odd, isn't it? Usually the military leader wears what the rest of his men do, only with more bling.
The only thing I got for that is that different color was his 'bling'. Show that he's not better than the other soldiers but that he's different enough from them to be set apart.
I guess that's a question someone can ask at one of the cons. *g*
Sadly, Joe doesn't tend to remember much about the show at cons. He explained it as 'dumping his internal hard drive', but I'll try to get someone to ask.
The only other person who might know is an evil SOB and I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to go to his blog and ask.
