It's funny. I was one of the first people to get excited about [livejournal.com profile] five0bang when it was announced, now with the deadline ending tonight, I don't think I'm going to sign-up.

I really want to, but the minimum word count is keeping me from proceeding. I've written dozens of stories 40k words long, but the plot I have in mind is more a 20-30k type thing and I don't want to risk signing up and being forced to tack on words I don't need to. My predictions about the length a story are pretty accurate. And this is the story I want to write right now.

I'll mainly miss the excitement of a collective group effort working toward the same goal. I admit, I love the idea of collaborating with an artist. There's just something extra special about seeing how words inspire an artist's creativity.

On a positive note, I won't have to wait until January to post it when it's done. :D

Okay, done whining :-P

wasn't there also a H50 bang - with like a 7,000 min? that way you'd be way over it :)

ETA - *goes to look* oh .. it's a slashy one. Though they say 'gen' as well, I know you focus more on the gen/team - which I can't wait to read :)

Thanks for the tip, but I read the rules and there has to be a Steve/Danny pairing. I missed out on an earlier big bang that had a lower limit. Oh, well. Maybe another time :D

On one hand: :( and on the other hand: :)

I would have loved to see a H50 BigBang story by you and have it decorated with art but on the other hand, as you said, tacking on words just to meet the word limit can really drag a story down.

A big plus: We get to read the story ealier! \o/

Yeah, I wouldn't want to drag things down with needless extra plot.

On a positive note, I won't have to wait until January to post it when it's done. :D....this is definitely the up side of you not doing the five-0 bang. January is a long way off to wait.
And hon, I'm sure there are lots of artists who'd be inspired by your story even if it's not in the five-0 bang!!
If I was an artist, I'd create for you....but sorry, I can't even draw a straight line!
Looking forward to reading when you're finished.

Awwwwww. That's really sweet of you. If I had a graphic artist bone in my body I'd put something together, but that's okay. I'll stick the words :D

I don't get why press for so many words in BBs. The White Collar Big Bang had 10k word limit and it was much easier to join...

Apparently there was a Big Bang earlier in the year with a lower limit. If it's been 30k I would have been much more temped, but 40k is a lot!

Your ability to estimate word count before writing a story really intrigues me. Maybe it is inexperience, but I very little if any ability to estimate story length. I think I could accomplish more in my writing if I could plan this out a bit better. I do know I underestimate my word count by a fair bit, so I am trying to take that into account. But beyond that...I dunno. How do you manage that?

I am looking forward to seeing an episode of H5O over the summer. I've read a couple of your H50 fics now and they have me pretty excited about the possibilities for the show.

As far as guessing a word count, I chalk it up to part experience and how I envision the pace of the story and major scenes in my head. With one-shots, if I foresee the story to be concise, filled with action of raw emotion, than those tend to be shorter. Depending if there's a singular event I'm focusing on or if the story will take place over a course of a few days or a few hours is a good indicator of the length. Is it from a one POV or multiple?

The Shep HC fic is a single POV piece with what I hope will be lots of emotion. The plot is very focused and I imagine it'll be 5k-8k maybe?

The H50 story will be from Steve's and Danny's POV which will add length. I almost imagine it as a six act play if that makes sense, based on the major scenes I have in my head. And it just 'feel's 20-30k type story.

We'll see!

Phew, minor heart attack this morning! I got an email alert from your LJ saying "Not Doing Five-O Bang" and I thought you weren't writing at all!! Yay to ready early and yay for not adding unnecessary stuff to what I'm sure will be an awesome fic! Really, the unnecessary stuff I gloss over and read the meaty stuff, so I'd rather see 20-30k of normal meaty stuff from you, than 40k of nonsense ;)

No, you're all good! I'd never add unnecessary scenes to a story to fir a word count, so that's why I backed away from committing to the Big Bang.
