Just a bit of an update.
We've finally settled into our new apartment. Cable and the net were turned on tonight and this weekend we're going to make curtains! I never realized how much of a cave our old place was compared to all the windows and sunlight here!
My walk to work is a solid twenty minutes whether it is rain, sleet or snow, but it's good exercise even if the wind nearly knocked me down today. Despite the time, my walk is really nice. We lucked out and moved into an apartment we could afford in the middle of a historic neighborhood...which was wow...how did we land this?? lol...All the homes around here are amazingly cool. I love looking at them as I go by them every day.
This is the view out the second floor of our place. *click to enlarge*
I took a brain break this week from writing. Out of the Depths was a grueling emotional story for me and I loved writing it, but it was quite draining. I'm excited to start my
casestory this weekend! I have a really fun, intense idea that I'm giddy to start! I want people's hands to sweat reading it...heeee.
I always have music I listen to to when I write. I've recommended several artists. Air, DJ Shadow, UNKLE, Massive Attack, Radiohead, NIN. Does anyone have any other type of downtempo, electronia to rec? Not that NIN or Radiohead fit in that cat, but I'm just looking for good music to write to.
I've read a lot about Florence and the Machine --- is that something I should check out?
Does anyone have a mix they've uploaded anywhere that is good to listen to during writing?

Date: 2012-02-25 03:25 am (UTC)I listen to so much different music, it's hard to think of anyone in particular to rec when people ask. /o\ I like more indie stuff though - but ranging from instrumental, mellow stuff to heavy bass/electronic stuff to Jonathan Bon Jovi to borderline metal. I have an H50 playlist that grows everyday... maybe I should compile and upload that sucker?!
(Oh and your neighborhood looks gorgeous! Except for the snow, that is... ;p)

I wouldn't call Florence and the Machine downtempo really, but I like a lot of it.
You probably wouldn't be into my writing music, mostly angst of course. =)

Date: 2012-02-25 03:47 am (UTC)I like everything so it doesn't have to be all downtempo, but I want to check out FaTM :D

Date: 2012-02-25 03:32 am (UTC)I have playlists for characters and stories rather than just mood. I like FatM. Not angsty but occasionally melancholy. She has a beautiful voice. Her videos are kind of weird and don't seem to fit the songs at all. But I may just be getting old!

Date: 2012-02-25 03:55 am (UTC)The spring and summer is just soooo awesome. We have an annual Garden Walk in July. I admit I feel safer here(not that we were in a bad part of town before, but not the greatest). We had to dig deep for the extra rent, but I really like it here.
It is a fresh start!

Date: 2012-02-25 04:03 am (UTC)I def wouldn't call Florence and the machine downtempo I would call them amazing and inspiring. Flo's voice is fantastic and the lyrics are really good.
I don't listen to much down tempo myself but if you ever need to rock your socks off i can def help you out :DD

Date: 2012-02-25 04:40 am (UTC)I don't have anything uploaded, but I often listen to this CD when I want something downtempo. It's very creatively soothing so if you think it's your thing just LMK (you could probably find tracks on iTunes to preview).

Date: 2012-02-25 08:57 am (UTC)umm... down tempo, lemme think - cinematic orchestra - to build a home is one of my favorites by them. the ballad of broken birdie records by mum is a good song. i love the postal service and styrofoam. some of the postal service guys did some side projects with great results - i'm kinda thinking port blue might be exactly what you're looking for right now. if i remember right, they're all instrumentals, down tempo. good mood music, but not too distracting.
glad you're settling in to your new place, i know we havent talked in ages - i only pop in on lj every once in awhile lately. i might have to try one of your hawaii 5-0 stories one of these days - its one of hubby's shows, so i'm familiar with the characters, and i do miss your stories! good luck on the next one! ;p
i wish i could upload a mix for you but all my stuff is on itunes and my old file converter program doesnt seem to work on windows 7. if you have any suggestions, i'll see what i can do for ya.

Date: 2012-02-25 08:39 pm (UTC)I'm all over the place when it comes to music - rock, pop, new age, Celtic. Everything except country (I used to like country then... didn't, I don't know why). I especially like soundtracks as they provide what I need most when planning stories. The soundtrack to Tombraider may have some music you'd like, as well as the soundtrack to The Fifth Element.

Date: 2012-02-26 04:38 am (UTC)Wow, snow. It was in the mid-70's here Friday. How weird to see snow. What a strange winter it has been.
I've been hearing some Florence and the Machine on the radio lately and I like them. I also recently heard Naked & Famous and liked them. They sort of reminded me of something new mixed with old modern rock, if that makes sense. ;)
