It's been an interesting week. We had friends down from Ottawa for a very brief visit. Nate moved to Canada and needed to come to Buffalo to cross the border and re-enter as a resident. It was fun to hang out with Eric's best friend and meet his wife. We had a great time and now that his papers are all good, we expect to see them more.

I'm on episode five of the first season of "Rome". I'm really enjoying this show a lot as my Roman history is spotty vs my knowledge of Japanese, Chinese and late European. Now I know why it was canceled for the extensive sets and costumes, it's certainly more entertaining then the "Tudors".

I had high hopes for the "Tudors", but was disappointed in how slow the pace was. I mean I'm all for political, religious intrigue, but the entire season only covered Henry's first divorce and he had six other wifes and let's not forget that whole breaking away from Rome!

Been doing a lot of scientific research for[livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang . I believe in knowing about a subject matter if there is an aspect of it in your story or the characters have to talk about things. I want to feel comfortable enough to understand it without being an expert.

However, I have to hand it to the SGA writers, after studying theories in wormhole technology, light speed and cold fusion, my head was spinning. No wonder they leave plot holes in wave their hands magically about things.

Oh and my head phones broke! That means no music or listening to music when I write or I'm on the computer. It is horrid! I don't have computer speakers b/c my headphones are nice and I tend to listen to things late at night. It'll be mid-week before I can go buy a new set.

There is a documentary on about Sumo Wrestling on that my husband is watching, sounds intriguing

The latter will be covered in the upcoming second season - in fact, I think it's one of the big plot points for the season.

I believe the reason the story is going so slowly is because the premise for this particular series is to concentrate on the divorce of Katherine/seduction and marriage of Anne, and possibly end with Anne's death and the courting/marriage of Jane - and all the political ramifications that are created out of these situations. From what I'd read before the series aired, I never got the impression it was going to be another Six Wives of Henry VIII, and would focus entirely on the Boleyn era.

Even though I also watch the series, because I've watched and read anything to do with this period since I was a young girl, I have some problems with this series as well - mostly in the casting of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, who I think is one of the worst casting choices I've ever seen for Henry VIII. Everyone else, for the most part, is believable enough. But some of the writing also leaves much to be desired and is, at times, cringe-worthy.

Yet I'll tune back in when season two starts. ;)

I didn't know that going in that it would focus on only Anne, its the whole pre-expectation's thing. I've enjoyed the time spent on the seduction by Anne and her family's plotting to ruin Cardinal Woosley. I was also more intrigued by Charles's relationship with Henry's sister for a while.

Its a weird thing to read about all the arranged marriages, its another when you see Katherine's daughter who is eight, dance with her husband to be who is in his mid-20's.

Wow. And the way royalty is treated is a lot more vivid and cruel when you see it on screen, have to hand it to their researchers for every detail used showing the days at court.

Did you see the wee bit in ROME where the gladiator does the 2 sword spin thing??? hehehe it was awesome!

The split with Rome is yet to come in the Tudors. They don't get to it in the first season, which is historically correct cos it doesn't happen til he marries Anne, or very close to it. I think it'll be suitably dramatic when it does happen. Yes, I was a bit disappointed that they weren't looking at all his wives. I have a wonderful book called Six Wives by David Starkey, which goes through them all, in depth. It's a good read, and if I could, I'd send you my copy but it's very fat, and therefore expensive to send. Maybe you could check it out at the library? I found it quite readable, and yet in depth, so it might be of interest to you.

Awww sorry about your headphones, that really sucks. I THINK I have a spare set of ones from an old IPOD shuffle - the ones that sit just inside your ear. If you're not wanting to spend $$ on new ones, and you like that style of headphones, I can disinfect them and they'd be small enough to post inside a card. Just let me know. I know it sounds dodgy using someone else's headphones but I promise I'd clean them well!

*hugs*

Oh don't worry about the headphones, I plan on getting a new set this week...sometime..lol

Once I understood that the Tudors were going to focus on The Anna years I was fine, but they could take some lessons from Rome in terms of pace. My husband thought I watched the Tudors at night so it would help me sleep! lol

I might take a look at that book one day, saving the name to a file of things to read.
