Interesting this was written in August.
Winter's Worst Cold and Snow
Overall, AccuWeather.com Chief Long-Range Meteorologist Joe Bastardi is predicting that the worst of winter's cold and snow will be from the Pacific Northwest into the northern Plains and western Great Lakes. That will put cities like Portland and Seattle that escaped with a very nice winter last year, colder and snowier this year. Fargo and Minneapolis to Green Bay will also receive above-normal winter snowfall.
Other cities predicted to receive above-normal winter snowfall include Chicago, Omaha, Minneapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, Seattle and Portland. Bastardi predicts severe cold will hit Alaska and western and central Canada.
"The Canadian winter will be as harsh as last year's was gentle," Bastardi said. Rest of the Article here.

Can fully relate as I am in blue area.
It was 18 last night here and snow on the ground this morning when I woke up.
I am not certain I will be able to do Thanksgiving given my sister's inlaws are at higher elevation than I am........
My friend in WA told me they had overnight of -2 and tonight expected to hit -12 to -15 so I suppose 18 is positively balmy eh???
They are calling for cold again tonight but clear, but the sky is looking very suspicious right now.
We often have 'Arctic express' and this was one of them...........
We went from beginning of fall to winter quickly this year.
Fortunately I had an insulation upgrade last year so I guess I should not be surprised furnace is not cycling as often as it did in winter of '08.....
Just in time.
BTW Sheppard would love this weather since he liked
Antarctica so much
:D

Date: 2010-11-24 06:01 pm (UTC)THAT will be my determining factor.
Meanwhile getting geared up for my part of the feast.
I make cranberry relish each year and I also provide
French rolls...........My sister makes a pumpkin and a pecan pie and her SIL does the rest.
BUT if I had to stay home, it would be no big deal as I have explained, been there, done that before as a dependent and active duty.
:D
In fact I used to volunteer to take OOD to allow married guys to spend it with their families and when I was standing rotating watches, it rarely happened that we had a holiday free.

Date: 2010-11-23 11:34 pm (UTC)I swear, every time all the other states get nasty weather, we get normal weather - cold when it's supposed to be cold, warm when it's supposed to be warm, a couple of days of soft powdery snow that a couple of days later melts away, never to be seen again, while everyone else is buried alive in their homes.

Date: 2010-11-24 06:03 pm (UTC)Makes walking to work treacherous,
I thought of you for exactly same reason.
I am thinking seriously of not walking today but riding my upright for my daily workout...........
I am just not into bitterly frigid today......

Date: 2010-11-24 02:40 am (UTC)I don't think you need to be a meteorologist to predict that. ;D
Of course, it's still 35 degrees and raining, so what do I know ...
Hopefully the winter won't be too awful.

Date: 2010-11-24 03:04 am (UTC)yeah, I'll subscribe to this. It matches what we've heard. Higher levels of snowfall this year. Last year can't really be used as an comparison, it was *amazingly* light, we only had a couple inches of snow once. HIGHLY unusual. (and I was highly irritated that I didn't get to use my 4x4 even once... something I've already used. LOL) but before that we had 2 consecutive 100 year snowfall winters. LOL
This year, a bit above average but hopefully nothing like 2 years ago. Ugh. ;)

Date: 2010-11-24 05:53 am (UTC)I wasn't born here, I actually grew up in the Seattle area, though we lived in the mountains and got more snow than the Seattle area did. Its a bit more extreme here (hotter summers and colder snowier winters) but not too bad. :)
I love winter for skiing and summer for all the other outdoor things you can do! :D
Besides, I need a little 4x4 in my life. Keeps things interesting. heheheh ;)
