Writing question.

Have you ever had a pretty cool idea pop in your head for a fic and once you got your thoughts together you realized that the plot has been covered a lot by other writers?

I mean there are only so many plots in any genre and with a fandom as big certain themes are going to be explored over and over. When does it reach a saturation point and when your 'twist' enough to do it justice?

I've been pondering an idea for a one shot for a while, but I don't like similarity towards other writer's stories. Its kind of frustrating but I think I'm going to go ahead and do it.

Of course I have so many one shot ideas flying around in my head, who knows which one will bite first...but I do want to write something about Shep and his love for flying and the use of an alien craft...have a novel twist as I've said.

Hmmmmmmmm

I've had that same problem. Not so much with a genre that's been over done but mostly that someone had already written a story similar enough that I don't feel it right to do my story. Feels like I'm copying them or something, even though I'm not.

As for overdone genres, I wouldn't worry about them. I did KidFic and that's been done to death. Plus some genres one can never write enough of (like H/C stuff).

Well its really more like I fear its close to a specific fic ...I had the idea in my head BEFORE I read the story, than was bummed to see it was somewhat alike. I know there's a difference, but I'm always paranoid that a reader will go.."huh this reads like blah blah's story."

Again I'll just write it and see what happens,, a lot of time one shots veer off course for me anyways....and it depends which bunny wins the battle next in any case.

Thanks for your thoughts

K

Yeah, that's happened to me, too. What happens more often, though, is me coming up with elaborate idea that I really start to think out and whatnot, and then absolutely cannot write it. Grrr.

All stories are somehow derivative; from human experience, history and fantasy borne out of those. And IMHO, no-one can copyright an idea, because I bet my big ass that someone else has had that idea somewhere else or for something else. Every writer puts in pieces of his/her psyche into it - and that's what makes the difference.

Oh, don't worry about that. SGA is especially known for its fic genres, and I'm sure whatever you write will have it's own original twist. As a matter of fact, I insist you write whichever fabulous idea hits first. We'll love it! ^___^
