Um..Okay Torchwood Question
Feb. 9th, 2008 11:51 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
The past two weekends I've left Dr. Who and Torchwood on in the background while I wrote. It makes me raise an eyebrow or two now and then. I should just go on wikipedia but if I ever decide to watch from the beginning without being spoiled, I don't want to.
But Jack just go stabbed in the chest by this..well um alien knife/sword thing and he just walked or more like ran away without batting an eye.
Can he not be hurt or something?

Still might poke around the series.

Date: 2008-02-18 01:16 pm (UTC)Rose's actions that brought him back to life had the unexpected side effect of making him a 'fixed point in time and space' according to the Doctor - Jack is "wrong" and shouldn't exist
my advice with Doctor Who is to start with the Christopher Eccelston Doctor's eps and move forward from that time - and you could always goto Wikipedia and do a bit of reading on it - there are some fairly thorough descriptions of the show there
as for Jack not being able to die making it anti-climatic - well the thing to keep him mind - he might come back to life - but he does suffer the death and generally it is not pleasant - plus if he's just injured he heals at the same rate as a normal human - only when he 'dies' does he have a miraculous healing/recovery - I'm figuring in the ep where the alien stabbed him - that Jack was basically hovering on death's doorstep while waiting for Gwen (don't get me started on her!) to finish disabling the alien tech - so when he pulled off the alien sword - he 'healed' instantly cause basically he should have been dead from the wound

Date: 2008-02-10 05:08 am (UTC)Being immortal does take the danger out of things in a way though.
Being a tortured soul though has me interested...wonder what that says about me....hm.

I know what you mean. I tend to go for those characters, too.
Also, he does technically does die temporarily. He once said that dying and coming back is like being dragged through glass.

Date: 2008-02-10 05:45 am (UTC)OH, the topic of his death..it's a long implied story, believe me..it's LONG and transverses over to Doctor Who.
He can feel pain, it's just he comes back..so he's dead for a minute..or in one instance a few days..and boom, he's back.
He doesn't kiss random strangers though, they do sort of mean something..but flirts..yep, he does do that, but that's just him. *smile*

Date: 2008-02-10 05:47 am (UTC)I have no real plans to watch Dr Who, but what I'll do is wait for SGA to end and then d/l season 1.

Date: 2008-02-10 05:59 am (UTC)That was Captain John, they go way WAY back.
You'll enjoy it, I've been watching it for so long now, I watched the BBC versions (I had to, I loved that character on Doctor Who) then it finally played here almost a year later,..but season 2 here is right on schedule with the BBC version, well, pretty close at least, it's week ahead, so it's almost like a double encore version on Saturdays.

Date: 2008-02-10 11:50 am (UTC)It can be a little bit cheesy and tongue-in-cheek at times but in general it's a fantastic show that tells some great stories... and, especially once you get to the David Tennant series, WOW there's angst and whump! :D
The first season (talking new Doctor Who here, not the classic series) with Chris Eccleston is good and tells some great stories but the character, as played by Eccleston, didn't really grab me. I like the first series but I wasn't fannish. Then DT took over and I was hooked. Overnight. Didn't hurt that his first full episode, The Christmas Invasion, had him whumped through about 90% of it! :D
Seasons 2 and 3 with Tennant as the Doctor have been excellent with only one or two clunkers (yeah, avoid the Dalek 2-parter in Season 3! :/) and some really excellent episodes.
The Doctor, especially as played by Tennant, is such a wonderful, dark, mysterious character and sooo angsty and tortured - it's wonderful! :D Seriously - give it a go!

Date: 2008-02-10 01:14 pm (UTC)Anyway, Kristen, I like both shows, but Torchwood a little more. I need to check out more of Dr. Who, because I've only seen 12 episodes total, from all seasons mixed up, most being Cpt Jack's eps in the Dr. Who show...
But Cpt Jack is my fave character followed closely by DT's doctor. You should really check both shows, it's worth it! And it keeps me hooked during these low eps of Atlantis lately, although I am looking forward for Midway and The Last Man, but after those it's a pretty long hiatus.
I need a TW ad DW icon now. XD

We're past the eppys I was worried about in SGA, I'm looking forward to the lsat 4 eppys in glee, but I need to find something later!

Date: 2008-02-11 07:07 am (UTC)Mmm yeah totally.
If you want some key eps, I'd start with (S2)Tooth & Claw. This is why/when Torchwood starts. The Girl in the Fireplace (S2) is a sad and angsty ep that focuses in on a lonely Doctor. Very good. From S1, the Captain Jack eps start with The Empty Child, through the end of that season. You can see how Jack became immortal (The Parting of Ways, I think) and Christmas Invasion features a new Doctor. Some h/c in that one. Army of Ghosts gives us the new Torchwood.
Some randomly weird episodes... Fear Her (S2), The Lazarus Experiment (S3), and these two eps Human Nature/The Family of Blood (S3) show The Doctor at his darkest.
Utopia (S3) is the return of Jack, which should have coincided with Torchwood's Abaddon (watch this first). Utopia is also the return of an old enemy.
And who is still creeped out by Blink? *shudders*
Also, Capt. John Hart is none other than James Marsters of Buffy fame. Hide yer poodles, ladies! You never know who Jack will kiss next. I'll watch Captain Jack Harness (S1 TW) for a sixth time if i have to. Dammit.
Enjoy!

Date: 2008-02-10 01:13 pm (UTC)I tend to merely tolerate them rather than actually enjoy their participation in the show.
As for what is going on with Jack, well I guess that has already been explained in the comments above.
He is to all purposes immortal, though he can die temporarily and he does feel pain. I remember that he described been brought back to life as being similar to being dragged back over broken glass.
The writers have gone to a lot of trouble to give Jack an air of mystery, providing us with only little glimpses of his past life and teasing us with the knowledge of possible future revelations about his character.
In a way he's a tragic character somewhat like The Doctor. Doomed to outlive or leave behind those that he has come to love he must find the strength to carry on and live with the consequences of his own past mistakes and losses.
Jack's character has a huge potential for angst and h/c and because so little is know of his background he provides a writer with infinite possible story lines without them even having to go against canon.

Date: 2008-02-11 05:50 am (UTC)As I've said to others...I've tried to get into Dr Who, but won't grab me....I'll try again once SPN and SGA go into repeats
sigh.
Thanks for the advice!
